I've got the sun in my eyes

Kilimanjaro

I’m not crazy, I’m just a little unwell

Oh nooo… sometimes I still wonder what I am getting myself into. Will I make it? For those who know me, I am definately not what you would call ‘an outdoor person’. I hate to walk, resolve to drive or take taxi everywhere (Although I am guilty for not being eco-friendly). Now, here we are talking about walking 11km up to the height of 5895m! Was I out of my mind to sign up for this?

Somehow, somewhere, the name Kilimanjaro got stuck in my mind. I can’t recall when was our first encounter? Was it after Kinabalu? It’s like a dream. One from my bucket list.

This will the 3rd mountain I conquered (Perhaps it will should be the last – I can’t imagine a Ms Teh, the mountaineer. Will I develop huge calf muscles? Yikes)

I did Mount Fuji (3776m) in 1999. I still remember how I was back then – the complain queen. Yin Mun, my mate from school had to put up with me all the way. I wanted to get up there but it was too hot then freezing cold next so we kept making pit stops in order for me to put on and off my layers of clothings. But we made it! I have only printed pictures. Gotta dig them out someday and put em up here.

Next was Mount Kinabalu in 2005. I made it although I suffered quite a lot from AMS (Altitude Sickness). Even the day after we descended!

I guess, for Kilimanjaro, I might have to take Diamox (125mg twice a day) for prevention but the down side will be that I’ll have to pee thousands of times per day (side effect of the meds) :( I gotta read up more about it. From what I gathered so far, some tips and tricks to avoid AMS:

  • Walk/ Climb slowly
  • A lot of rest
  • Drink a lot of water (4 litres per day)
  • Avoid use of sedatives or tranquilizers
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Diet high in carbo, low in salt
  • Take painkillers and antisickness meds (e.g. anti-histamines)
  • Ginger tea might help!

Training wise, I am trying (hear me, trying!!!) to go to the gym 3 times a week for body pump, body combat/ attack and 30 mins cardio training on the running machine.

For the moment, I am indulging myself extensively in all the online shopping that I HAVE to do :)

Countdown: 20 days
